It may take a few days later than normal, but the Baer Memorial Pool in Lehighton will still be open on Memorial Day weekend.
Borough recreation director Tom Evans said that rather than opening on Saturday, the decision was made to postpone the opening to Monday.
“Due to the weather this weekend,” Evans said, adding that the pool will open at noon on Memorial Day, and will be open daily from that point, weather permitting.
Evans said the pool is open to Carbon County residents only and that he plans to keep the capacity at 75%.
The pool can accommodate 600 people, so it will seek to keep attendance at around 450 people.
Evans said the plan was to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols, and keep numbers low in washrooms and at the concession booth.
He said pool passes are on sale and daily admission is $ 7 for adults and $ 5 for children.
Evans said swimming lessons would start at 6:30 p.m. on June 14, and morning sessions at 10:30 a.m. on June 24.
He said that those interested in swimming lessons can register at the pool.
Evans noted that a new 30-by-30-foot pool pavilion should be ready by the end of June.
Similar to the existing 21-by-30-foot pavilion, the new larger pavilion is the result of a joint effort between the Lehighton Area Pool Pals and the Borough.
The borough will be responsible for installing the concrete slab and powering the pavilion. The Pool Pals will cover the cost of the remaining structure.
Evans said the pool provided a refreshing respite from the COVID-19 virus.
“Everyone can’t wait to go out and have fun,” he said. “It was a long winter for everyone.”
