Brewster Place Ribbon Cut

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Brewster Place officially unveiled its new cultural arts center on Wednesday morning in a ceremony at the facility, located at 900 SW 31st.

The dedication ceremony took place as four residents of Brewster Place held a ribbon near the edge of a full-size indoor pool.

The event was held in conjunction with an Energy Breakfast from the Greater Topeka Partnership at Brewster Place.

The Cultural Arts Center is part of a $ 25 million project at Brewster Place, a retirement community of approximately 350 residents and more than 300 employees.

In addition to the swimming pool, the project includes a new theater, which also has a pickleball field; a fitness center; a carpentry workshop; a dining room and a kitchen; a parking garage; and new units in the Cottonwood Villas, an area that offers independent residences in Brewster Place.

Officials said people 55 and older in the Topeka community can sign up for Brewster Connect, which allows them to use the pool, health center, dining room, and take part in sponsored trips. by the retreat center.

Brewster Place officials said construction on the facility was completed by the end of 2020, but cutting the tape was delayed until Wednesday due to coronavirus concerns.

“It’s a big project,” said Joe Ewert, CEO of Brewster Place. “That’s a lot of really cool amenities.

“We finished construction in late 2020, but in the midst of the pandemic, of course, we couldn’t have a grand opening. So it’s great to have people here this morning and welcome them to Brewster Place.

Several Brewster Place residents were on hand for the dedication ceremony, including four who were in the pool stretching the cut ribbon with a large pair of scissors during the event.

Among them was Diana Reed, who said she had lived in Brewster Place for three years.

Reed said she enjoyed the pool and the other activities on offer at Brewster Place.

“The people here are so wonderful,” Reed said, “There are all types of different people – people who like all kinds of activities, who like to swim, who like to be physically active. People play bridge here. . People have book clubs. There is just everything to do here.

Another Brewster Place resident who was at Wednesday morning’s ceremony was Jim Banks.

“I’ve lived here in Brewster Place for 10 years – just over 10 years – and I haven’t ever regretted it,” Banks said. “It’s the best place to live. “
