Collection Tibi Resort 2022 | Vogue

Amy Smilovic’s Instagram isn’t just for snaps of the new Tibi collections or glimpses of her everyday outfits. It’s a true style guide, with tips and tricks for fashion freaks and rookies. A recent flagship coil is taking on mini skirts, spurred on by one follower’s question about how to wear tiny hems after years of midi lengths. Response from Smilovic: You can “chill” a sexy skirt by balancing it with a big sweatshirt. Another reel is dedicated to color mixing: never wear bright colors with white or black, and if you mix pastel tones or jewelry tones, a shock of textures will keep the look modern. So, yes: she has rules. But Smilovic is also adamant that the rules can sometimes be broken.

Consider her 2022 resort collection, which hits stores today: The opening look features a black blazer, emerald skirt, and a ruched turquoise bodysuit, a seemingly mistaken combination of blacks and glitters. In Smilovic’s eyes, it works because of the “icky” textures: the skirt is a shiny, paper-thin nylon, while the soft bodysuit is gathered and a bit smooth. A daffodil tube top and a flowing black skirt also call for a second look: the stretchy top is actually cashmere, lending a bit of softness to the seemingly striking color contrast.

Elsewhere, a “pant-skirt” sits lower on the hips and extends past the knee; sparkly holiday dresses come in thin, square proportions; and narrow pants in sunny daisy jacquard skim the ankles. Smilovic paired them with a second-skin t-shirt in a micro version of daisies, a rare example of head-to-toe prints. In general, she advises her subscribers to avoid impressions altogether; at the very least, they shouldn’t be wearing a printed top with plain pants (looks too grown-up, too stereotypical). But she made an exception here because she wanted “something light”. For all of its rules and handy tips, the goal is almost always to make fashion easier, more accessible and more fun. Look closely and you will notice that some of the daisies have been knitted with little smiley faces, a reminder not to take anything too seriously.
