As drought threatens western France, the towns of Niort and Sansais-La-Garette are pumping water from swimming pools and an ice rink to hydrate nearby green spaces.

The municipality said it was the first time the city had used this “common sense measure”.

Almost the entire country is expected to be hit by drought this summer, with the southeastern and western regions particularly hard hit, Connexion France reported last month. No region of France is immune to drought this summer, according to data published by the Ministry of Ecology and Le Monde.

Currently, 24 departments are subject to water restrictions, according to the country’s Ministry of Ecological Transition. Restrictions range from simple calls to save water for certain areas to a reduction of more than 50% in water use for agricultural withdrawals. Some places have banned washing cars, watering gardens and filling swimming pools, The Press United reported.

Eight departments have been under restrictions since mid-April, when rainfall for the country reached 25% below normal. Abnormally warm temperatures in May exacerbated the problem.

The drought in France comes as regions around the world have experienced severe drought exacerbated by climate change in recent years.
