The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milford recently announced that the pool at the Richard M. Johnson Aquatic Center will be getting some upgrades, thanks to funding provided by the Government Bond Bill. Upgrades will require the pool to be shut down for approximately one month.
“The old pool lighting has been replaced with LED lighting,” said club executive director Paul Dorey. “The pool’s old rubber decking is being removed, the decking is being re-leveled for proper drainage, and a new coat of non-slip epoxy is being applied for a complete surface rehabilitation.”
Dorey explains that in the winter, up to 500 people use the pool at the aquatic center each week.
“This is the only year-round aquatic facility in Milford,” Dorey said. “It’s heated to 83 degrees which is not only ideal for swim teams and exercise, but also allows for swimming lessons and recreation all year round. We offer swimming lessons, free swimming, swim teams, lifeguard certifications and rentals. »
The Aquatic Center features a 25-yard, six-lane pool with competitive starting blocks and a timing system. The shallow end is three and a half feet while the deep end is seven feet. The facility also includes disabled-accessible changing rooms and showers. There is also a water safe ramp and wheelchair in the pool. Members can also use the club’s kickboards, foam dumbbells and pull buoys. Swimming lanes are intended for continuous lap swimming only with other forms of aquatic exercise available in other areas of the pool.
The Boys and Girls Club also sponsors a swim team with two subdivisions. The Mako Swim Club and Sussex Community Swim Team offer two competitive options. The Sussex Makos Community Swim Team is a seasonal community team. The two divisions compete side-by-side throughout the summer and winter while Mako Swim Club swimmers also attend US-sanctioned meets throughout the year throughout the region.
