Irish Events, Bake Sale and More at Pecan Plantation | Columnists


Originally from Mississippi, transplanted to Texas for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother and English teacher who wrote Pecan Plantation Bits for a total of 14 years. She spends her time gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid the passive voice.

The Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club will hold its next general meeting on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17, with social time beginning at 9:30 a.m. and President Annelle Teal calling the meeting at 10 a.m.

After their business meeting, the group will welcome author Debbie Taylor as she delivers “Little Van Gogh,” billed as a “heart-warming” story. An Irish themed lunch prepared by clubhouse staff will follow the program.

The ladies will be honoring the Rancho Brazos Community Center as a tabletop charity this month, and members are encouraged to bring items and money to donate.


Pecans can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday, March 17 with corned beef, cabbage and toppings in the Brazos room.

On Friday, March 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., St. Patrick’s Day Bingo will take place in the Pavilion Ballroom. Popcorn, drinks and cards will be provided to play $10 bingo. An open bar, prizes for the winners and a light menu in the Brazos room will also be available. Call the lodge reception to make a reservation: 817-573-2641.


The Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Services Auxiliary has a big day on the calendar for Saturday, March 19 when its spring bake sale begins at 10 a.m. at PAC. Members and volunteers prepare items for sale, and stews, soups and all kinds of pastries will make up the list of offerings. For specific instructions or to host or join a cooking party, contact bake sale co-chairs Patty Eatmon (951-970-5490) or Shirley Jairett (530-401-4936). All proceeds from the day will benefit Pecan Emergency Services volunteers.

On the same day, Cowtown Gold and Silver will be back for another fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. also at PAC. Residents may bring leftover jewelry, old cutlery and coins, and any other precious metals for sale; gold and silver must be genuine and not plated.

Customers will be paid on the spot and ten percent of the day’s sales will benefit our neighborhood VFD/EMS.


In addition, PPWC has also scheduled Saturday, March 26 for its annual Boot Scootin’ “Ropin’ in the Fun” party. Food, music and raffle tickets will make this fundraiser unforgettable. Proceeds from the event will be donated to charities selected by the PPWC. All tickets for the evening are sold out, but those wishing to be put on a waitlist (in the event of cancellation) can email [email protected]


An orientation session for new members is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Pecan Pavilion. New residents who did not attend an orientation, or residents who would like to be updated on our community amenities and events, are encouraged to attend.


The Pecan Genealogy Group will meet again on Tuesday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at Christ Church in Granbury. Everyone is welcome. Attendees will hear Kim Richardson talk about “how to research a courthouse”.

Students will be enjoying spring break next week and two events for young Pecan residents are on the schedule.

On Tuesday, March 15 at 10 a.m. there will be an archery tournament for shooters aged 8 to 13. Participants must be able to shoot independently. A hot dog lunch is included in the day. Sign up for PAC and attendees should bring a bow if they have one

On Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m., dodgeball will be presented at the PAC gymnasium. The event is free and no reservation is necessary. Open to students of all ages.


Due to the weather not cooperating on its original date, the Young Eagles fly-in has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 19 from 8:30 a.m.
