Irish tourist drowns in swimming pool at Spanish resort

An Irish tourist has drowned in a swimming pool at a resort on Spain’s Costa Dorada.
Emergency services rushed to the holiday apartment block in La Pineda near the east coast town of Tarragona after the alarm was raised around 11am this morning.
First responders attempted to revive the man at the scene but were unable to save him, with the holidaymaker tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Police sources confirmed the man was Irish and his body has been removed for an autopsy.
The pool where he drowned was part of an apartment complex five minutes from the beach called Apartments Pineda Park.
A Mossos d’Esquadra regional police spokesperson said: “There is nothing at this stage to suggest that this man’s death was the result of a crime and is being treated as accidental.”

The anonymous tourist is said to have stayed in the region with relatives. It is not immediately known if his family witnessed the drowning.
The five-storey holiday building where the tragedy occurred describes itself online as “ideal for the accommodation of families with children and couples who wish to vacation on the Costa Dorada, where the best beaches of the Mediterranean coast”.
It’s a five-minute drive to Port Aventura theme park, home to Europe’s tallest and fastest roller coaster.

Staff declined to comment this afternoon “out of respect for the family of the deceased”.
The Costa Dorada, which translates to the Gold Coast in English, is a strip of Mediterranean coastline in the Spanish region of Catalonia southwest of Barcelona.
La Pineda, between Tarragona and the lively town of Salou, is famous for its large sandy beach which makes it particularly popular for family tourism.
