OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer and the occasion for what adventure resorts have normally been waiting for a year and now expecting two.
“Summer is our season here at ACE,” says Chris Colin, the resort’s special events coordinator. “We have a couple hundred people whitewater rafting today, a bunch of people ziplining, there are probably close to a thousand people here at the resort this weekend camping, stay in cabins, go out and celebrate the summer time kickoff. “
With rapid vaccine deployments and life slowly returning to normal, adventure stations like ACE and River Expeditions are gearing up for one of the busiest summers yet.
“So far our annual revenue has doubled from 2019, we are not comparing anything to 2020 because it was such a crazy year, so we are looking at the numbers for 2019 and we couldn’t be happier,” says Heather Johnson, owner of River Expeditions. .
Not only will the resorts anticipate more crowds after a year of quarantine, but they also expect to see an increase in the number of visitors coming to visit the new New River Gorge National Park.
“We’ve definitely stepped up in a very busy year, now with the national park designation and people anxious to get out of the house because they’ve been locked up for a year, people want to be outside, they want go to beautiful places, and that’s what we’re doing here, ”Colin says.
As the resorts expect to see an influx of people and a hectic season to come, they are more than ready to be great hosts for all of those flocking people. And everyone is ready for an unforgettable summer in the new New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
