News from Brighton and Hove » Goal! Football club gets approval for new stand, clubhouse and artificial pitch

A football club has obtained planning permission for a new stand, clubhouse and artificial pitch.

Councilors voted unanimously to approve Saltdean United Football Club’s planning application, to improve facilities at the playing fields at the upper end of Saltdean Vale.

The request, approved this afternoon (Wednesday October 5), will allow the club to set up a synthetic pitch in place of grass.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee has been told artificial pitch will be less prone to flooding.

It would also reduce wear and tear on other grass pitches in the area, as the club could use the artificial pitch all the time.

The planning application also included a two-storey clubhouse with changing rooms and stores on the ground floor and a reception hall, bar, toilets and social room on the first floor.

The club is expected to build a new spectator stand on the west side of the pitch with covered seating for around 300 people and seating for around 900 people in total. Plans call for parking for 43 cars and 30 bicycles.

Conservative Councilor Carol Theobald said: ‘This is an excellent property for adults and children. It’s a good design. It is also a big improvement over what currently exists. I am delighted that they take very good care of disabled access and parking.

Councilor Theobald added that she was happy the club had secured funding for the changes and wished them luck.

Green councilor Marianna Ebel said: ‘We need more sports facilities, good sports facilities. I like the design. It is a positive application.

The club said: “Everyone at the club is delighted to hear that our planning application has been approved today.

“A lot of hard work has gone into the planning – and this result will mean a lot to our players, our supporters and the local community.

“Our ambition has always been to improve and modernize our facilities while being sensitive to our environment.

“And now we look forward to delivering this first-class sporting facility as we enter the next chapter at Saltdean United.

“Our thanks go to the volunteers and many consultants who have spent two years getting us to this point.”
