Northern Michigan resort town offers guided lighthouse snowshoe hikes after the sun goes down

GAYLORD, MI — Putting on snowshoes always seems like a good idea on a family winter vacation or just a day trip, but sometimes it’s nice to have a guided tour — and a side of treats.

Treetop Station is implementing a series of guided snowshoe hikes with headlamps after sunset this winter. On Saturday evenings until March 12, adults and children aged 4 and over can put on snowshoes and a headlamp and go on an accompanied excursion on wooded trails. And there might be a few surprises along the way.

Here’s how Treetops describes the event: “A family-friendly guided moonlit snowshoe hike with headlamps provided for those who wish to participate. Your guide will lead you to a beautiful perch overlooking our new Extreme Tubing Park, then through the woods to a fire-lit setting where you can have a glass of steaming hot chocolate and roast a marshmallow for s’mores before heading back.. . .”

All hikes start at 6 p.m. on Saturday. You can get more details and book tickets online here. Some events can sell out quickly on certain dates, so it’s a good idea to book tickets before you arrive, resort staff said. Tickets are $20 for ages 13 and up and $15 for children ages 4-12.

Barry Owens, managing director of Treetops, said the evening snowshoe hikes were designed to provide a fun adventure and a time for families to make memories. It also matches the resort’s Winter Playground theme.

“It’s great for families and kids,” Owens said. “You go with a guide into the woods and the destination is a big bonfire with s’mores. You don’t get lost. It’s not very long. It’s a great moment of bonding with the family. »

Treetops, known for its skiing and snowboarding, also offers a long list of other outdoor winter activities. These include its Extreme Tubing park, dog sledding, sleigh rides and culinary events like the Ski Festivals.
