Oakland Hills hires architect for reconstruction as operations resume after fire

“It’s ironic,” Palmer said. “One of our great members, Chris Ilitch, hosted our leadership team last week, and he talked about embracing your history with our iconic clubhouse like they did with the Fox Theater, and he also talked about preparing for the future, and how can we secure the future of our clubhouse, just as we have secured the future of our golf course through investment and infrastructure in the ground . »

The cost of the rebuild has not been finalized and will need to be approved by members, according to the club.

Last month’s fire, which is believed to have been accidentally started by contractors working on a patio adjacent to the clubhouse, caused $80 million in damage, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said last week. . That estimate was given by insurance investigators, Crain confirmed to the department on Tuesday.

Palmer declined to say how the insurance payout would work or if members could face higher assessments to fund the reconstruction.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” he said. “The different insurance coverages and carriers are still in this negotiation.”

Peacock + Lewis, founded in 1961, has designed top-level hospitality and club amenities around the world, including Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables, Florida, Muirfield Village Golf Club and Clubhouse in Dublin, Ohio, and the Bay Harbor Yacht Club in Petoskey.

In January, Peacock + Lewis merged with JBD JGA, another Florida-based company with extensive experience in private clubs and hospitality.

“We’re thrilled with them so far,” Palmer said.

Oakland Hills intends to continue member operations as usual by adding a large, enclosed pavilion to accommodate dining and seating, Palmer said, adding details of the plan will be shared in the coming weeks. Weddings and private events are moved to alternative venues, he added.

“The tentative plan is for all of our member events, all of our invitations, all of our galas, all of which will take place,” Palmer said. “We are planning a full season.”
