ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Missouri – Halloween is getting closer and closer, and St. Louis families are getting creative in their front yard displays.
It’s a 24-year tradition for this South County couple to jointly create and craft a Halloween exhibit each October.
“This is the first time we’ve named the theme,” said Gene Butler. “So it’s Shard Terror Resort. We have the slide. This is my favorite part of being creative. I’m the props and (Jill’s) the finishing touch. She is the one who places all the flowers.
The couple have an arbor on which they grow gourds all summer.
“When we took it apart, we didn’t want to remove the leaves and vines because we knew we wanted to use the arbor for the Halloween exhibit this year,” said Jill Butler.
At the end of Halloween last year, this South County couple started imagining their 2021 display and came up with a most gruesome stop in Gateway City. The Shard Terror Resort features an otherworldly water slide.
“With the lights there are twinkling here at night and then the cellophane was just one more thing that I thought would make it pop during the day,” said Jill Butler.
The couple also enjoy doing exhibitions on Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. They say this fun, whimsical resort with Chip the skeleton waving to drivers is their favorite.
“People will stop or bring their kids here and take pictures,” said Gene Butler. “They are really very nice and thank us. We just received a card from a stranger thanking us for taking it out. She loves Halloween as much as we do and it makes us feel good. It’s like the icing on the cake.
A spooky cake, the kind you might find at Shard Terror Resort.
