On Saturday August 13, 2022, an hour before Ponty’s game against the London Welsh kicked off, a ceremony was held at the Clubhouse in Sardis Road in honor of one of the club’s greats. The Clubhouse lounge bar has been renamed the Bob Penberthy Salon.
Bob played a record 877 times for Pontypridd over a period of almost 25 years and was in attendance with family, friends and former teammates from yesteryear. It was a passionate, fun and at times emotional ceremony as the great man’s achievements were recognized.
Ponty RFC CEO Steve Reardon opened the ceremony and gave an impassioned speech about what Bob means to the club as well as his achievements. Steve passed on to another former great, Bob’s longtime teammate and close friend – Tommy David. Tommy spoke fondly of Bob as well as the jam-packed Lounge Bar laughing at anecdotes from his playing days with Bob in the famous black and white jersey.
Jack Bayliss then presented Bob with the club’s new home shirt, the design of which was based on a famous old kit from decades past that Bob wore with distinction. Bob then said a few words himself, the humble, unassuming gentle-giant of a man thanking the club for renaming the lounge. In a touching moment, members of the London Welsh Choir sang a congratulatory song for Bob to mark the occasion.
Just before the end of the ceremony, Steve Reardon summed up perfectly what Bob Penberthy means to the club – “The words icon and legend are pretty loosely lumped together these days so I thought about how best to describe what Bob is to Pontypridd RFC and he is quite simply a Titan of this club.”
