Vegan Butterbeer Now at Universal Orlando Resort

Guests at Universal Orlando Resort now have the option of enjoying a refreshing 100% dairy-free butterbeer. The previously highly replicated, buttery treat wouldn’t be served in the parks without its signature whipped topping. Since July 31, this addition is optional.

Among those celebrating the news are The Protego Foundationa non-profit group born out of a love of animals as well as the wizarding world.

We are a group of activists empowering all magical people to get active for animals[…]We were inspired by the Harry Potter and fantastic beasts series to compare how magical creatures in the wizarding world and how animals in the muggle world are treated.

The group has long advocated for the inclusion of vegan offerings in parks. Reinforced by Harry Potter elders like Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) and Robbie Jarvis (young James Potter), he strives to create “a wizarding fandom that is more mindful of the rights, feelings, and treatment of all creatures, regardless of species, size, or magical ability.” The Protego Foundation recently took to Instagram to celebrate what they consider a milestone.

The Protego Foundation collected over 75,000 signatures in 2018 on a petition calling for vegan butterbeer. Warner Bros. therefore began selling dairy-free bottled versions of the drink. The foundation’s campaign, operating under the title “Accio Vegan Butterbeer”, seeks to continue this mission, urging parks to offer customers an all-vegan version of the treat, including an all-vegan filling. The campaign page further explains its reasoning.

People with dairy allergies and those who choose to abstain from dairy due to animal welfare concerns deserve to experience everything that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has to offer, including the most popular themed drinks offer.

While the vegan whipped topping has yet to pan out, the call for greater food inclusion seems to be having an impact. Earlier this year, Universal Orlando Resort began offering vegan fare, including all-plant-based entrees to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Shepherd’s Pasty Pie, which uses meatless beef crumbs, is one of the new vegan offerings at Hogsmeade.

No-foam butterbeer can be purchased frozen, regular, and hot, although it’s important to note that only the frozen and regular versions are completely vegan as the base of hot butterbeer still contains dairy. Vegan Butterbeer can be found on tap at Universal Orlando, Harry Potter New York, and Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.
